ABOUT HIGHLAND DANCING

The OVSS board is a composite of trustees active in the various organizations that promote the Scottish heritage, culture, and arts. Some serve on the boards of the Kentucky Scottish weekend and the Ohio Scottish Games and Ohio Scottish arts school. There are also Highland dance instructors, pipers from the various bands, and Caledonian Society members.

The Highland dancing area is predominately comprised of the two local dancing groups. The Cincinnati-Scots Highland Dancers and the Cincinnati Highland Dancers are both performance and competition groups that perform for the OVSS organization.

The competitions are normally held in the Spring & Summer at Scottish Highland Games. Dancers compete and dance, except for 'reels' and 'twosomes', solo.

In Scottish solo dancing, little attention is paid to the pattern on the floor, while importance is placed upon the precise execution of intricate footwork. In their early forms, dance steps were either characterized by the rhythm of the feet treading the floor (as in hornpipes and modern tap-dancing), or by hopping on one foot while the other is moved to predetermined positions (setting or capering).
